Why Choose GE?

Over the course of its 100 plus years in business GE learned the importance of listening to customers. Products like the innovative GE refrigerators are designed to make your day-to-day routines easier. GE combines the latest technology, modern style, and convenience to design refrigerators suitable for every type of household.

History

In order to understand what makes GE a leader in the appliance industry, you have to take a look back on their path to success.

Founding and Milestones

Thomas Edison

The history of GE began in 1878 with inventor Thomas Edison. The original name of the company was the Edison Electric Light Company. The curious mind, creativity and persistence of Edison led him to invent appliances designed to make life easier for families. He wanted his inventions to take some of the steps out of simple tasks like cooking a meal.

In 1892, Thomas Edison merged his company with Thomas-Houston Electric Company to create General Electric. Edison eventually sold his shares to the company but stayed on as a consultant.

In 1906, the first GE major appliance was introduced in the form of an electric range. It helped to make cooking a meal faster and more convenient so that families could sit down to eat together in the evening.

Electric Range 1907

In 1925, the public marveled at GE’s introduction of a compact electric refrigerator for the home. It was designed with plenty of space to keep a family’s food cold and fresh. This early refrigerator operated on a very low current and was able to maintain a temperature that prevented food from spoiling. Think of the compact electric refrigerator as an early ancestor of a GE refrigerator with an Energy Star sticker today.

First Refrigerator

GE engineers working in the mid-1930s came up with a waste disposal built into the kitchen sink as well as a new front-loading dishwasher.

Moving into the 1950s, GE engineers stretched their creativity even more by introducing a line of appliances designed in canary yellow, turquoise green, and petal pink along with other appealing pastel colors! Who said kitchen appliances have to be drab?

Pastel Colored Appliances

Into the mid-20th century, GE engineers continued to search for new and different ways to design appliances that would prove helpful to families. In 1969 the company saw the arrival GE refrigerators with side-by-side doors featuring an ice and water dispenser.

First Custom Refrigerator

By the late 1990s, GE introduced fingerprint-resistant stainless steel refrigerators to suit the style preferences of families who wanted a kitchen with a sleek look. By the year 2000, GE refrigerator designs were incorporating more technology with LED lighting, water filtration systems, as well as speed chilling and thawing capabilities just to name a few.

GE Refrigerator

In 2015, the company designed a GE side-by-side refrigerator capable of serving up a single cup of Keurig. Enjoy your favorite coffee brewed by your modern refrigerator.

Not surprisingly, with all of its innovations, GE won the Smart Appliance Company of the Year Award in 2020 from the IoT Breakthrough Awards Program. GE continues to be a leader in the appliance industry due to its dedication to innovative, user-friendly, energy-saving products.
