History

So that you can get to know Maytag, we’ll take you through the company’s founding, early years, breakthroughs, and how it looks today.

Founding and Milestones

Frederick Louis Maytag founded the company in 1893 as the Maytag Washing Machine Company. After his death in 1937, the company was run by Frederick’s son, Elmer Henry, who lived until 1940. During the Great Depression, Maytag was one of the few manufacturers that were able to make a profit. The company was saved by the intervention of four military companies that required its services.

Then, during World War II, Maytag participated in the war effort by helping to make special components for military equipment. After the war, in 1946, it went back to what it was known for, producing washing machines. It was in 1949 that it produced the first line of automatic washing machines. During the Korean War, the company helped in the war effort again by manufacturing military equipment, but during this time, it continued to manufacture washing machines as well.

The Model 30 Wringer Washer was released in 1935.

In the 1950s, the industry grew rapidly, and it was then that Maytag began manufacturing some of the first washers and dryers for commercial self-service laundry companies. In 1960, the company stopped manufacturing refrigerators and ovens, but it wasn’t long before it began to expand and resume manufacturing kitchen appliances. It began making portable kitchen dishwashers and a line of food-waste disposers. In 1962, the last family member of the founder died, passing the company to E.G. Higdon and George M. Umbreit.

In 1967, Jesse White, a character actor, became the face of the company as its “lonely repairman” in its first television commercial. In 1975, the company introduced home-style laundries, and then in 1981, it acquired the Hardwick Stove Company. After 76 years, the company discontinued the production of its wringer washers in 1983. Then, in 1985, it introduced the first stacked washer and dryer. This was an industry-leading breakthrough for its time.

The company became a corporation in 1986, and it started selling a new full line of appliances after acquiring both the Norge Appliance Company and Magic Chef. The year after this acquisition, it added a line of front-loading commercial washers. Then in 1989, Gordon Jump took over as the company’s mascot, the repairman. In 1992, it began to manufacture its dishwashers in a plant based in Jackson, Tennessee, and then in 2001, it acquired Amana and included the Amana-build models under its corporate umbrella.

In 2005, the company was taken over by the Whirlpool Corporation after a battle between two groups ended its 112-year history as an independent entity. Finally, in early 2006, the acquisition of the company was completed by Whirlpool, which began to integrate the two appliance makers. Throughout the years, Whirlpool continued to use the repairman character for the Maytag brand. In 2014, Colin Ferguson became the next and current character to play the role, but the new commercials added a humorous touch to the original concept. Rather than playing the lonely repairman waiting for an appliance to break down, Ferguson wears a Maytag uniform and plays the part of the appliance itself.

After 2008, the Whirlpool Corporation dedicated 14 manufacturing plants in Mexico and the United States to manufacturing Maytag appliances. Refrigerators were designated to be produced in Amana, Iowa, and Reynosa, Tamaulipas.

Each of these plants continued with the company’s legacy workforce after the company was acquired by the Whirlpool Corporation. Today, most Maytag appliances are manufactured in Amana, Iowa, and Cleveland, Tennessee.

Key Facts

Historically, Maytag was known for developing and producing some of the first large home appliances, like laundry machines and refrigerators. Further, the company was acquired by the Whirlpool Corporation, which now distributes the brand on a wider scale across the world. It employs over 2,500 people, and the brand is worth approximately $4.7 billion. Although the original brand was known for washers and dryers, it is now one of the leading manufacturers of most large home appliances.

The company stands behind its products by providing the Maytag warranty. For any major kitchen or laundry appliance that was made after 2017, the appliance will come with a 10-year limited parts warranty. With this warranty, you also have coverage for all parts and labor on the appliance during the first year after purchase. For refrigerators, the warranty will cover the compressor for the full 10 years, provided that it was not damaged or inappropriately handled by the owner.
