History

Founding and Milestones
The history of GE began in 1878 with inventor Thomas Edison. The original name of the company was the Edison Electric Light Company. The curious mind, creativity and persistence of Edison led him to invent appliances designed to make life easier for families. He wanted his inventions to take some of the steps out of simple tasks like cooking a meal.
In 1892, Thomas Edison merged his company with Thomas-Houston Electric Company to create General Electric. Edison eventually sold his shares to the company but stayed on as a consultant.
In 1906, the first GE major appliance was introduced in the form of an electric range. It helped to make cooking a meal faster and more convenient so that families could sit down to eat together in the evening.
In 1925, the public marveled at GE’s introduction of a compact electric refrigerator for the home. It was designed with plenty of space to keep a family’s food cold and fresh. This early refrigerator operated on a very low current and was able to maintain a temperature that prevented food from spoiling. GE engineers working in the mid-1930s came up with a waste disposal built into the kitchen sink as well as a new front-loading dishwasher.
